Victor Wembanyama ‘stood down for rest of the NBA Summer League’ after just two games

Victor Wembanyama ‘stood down for rest of the NBA Summer League’ after just two games as San Antonio Spurs look to rest No 1 draft pick

Victor Wembanyama will play no further part in the NBA Summer League for the San Antonio Spurs, according to reports.

The 7ft-4ins Frenchman, selected as the No 1 overall draft pick last month, featured in both of the Spurs’ first two games.

But now, according to the San Antonio Express, Wembanyama has been stood down for the rest of the tournament.

It’s claimed the Spurs wanted him to have a taste of the NBA and he will now be allowed a break at the end of a tumultuous 12 months.

Wembanyama has had a whirlwind start to life as the most exciting NBA prospect since LeBron James.

Last week in Las Vegas, while walking around the Strip, pop star Britney Spears tried to get the Spurs star’s attention by tapping him on the shoulder.

But someone from Wembanyama’s security detail appeared to deflect her hand away and, in the process, struck Spears. Las Vegas police found she inadvertently ‘hit herself in the face.’

Wembanyama has since said that he didn’t see what happened and that he was unaware of who was trying to get his attention. ‘At first I was like, ‘No, you’re joking,” he said. ‘But, yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears.’

The rookie has now vowed to ‘disappear from the media’ for the next few months ahead of the new NBA season.

Speaking to reporters after his most recent game – an 85-80 loss to Portland – Wembanyama said: ‘In the past month, I think basketball wasn’t even 50% of my schedule… I can’t stand it. I know it’s a special moment in my life, but I’m glad it’s over. I just wanna hoop.

‘I just wanna work out, lift, because this is my life. Obviously, every first (overall) pick gotta go through this, but yeah it just makes me better for the future.’

Wembanyama marked his debut with an unconvincing performance in the Spurs’ win over the Charlotte Hornets.

His second Summer League appearance ended in defeat by the Portland Trail Blazers but Wembanyama racked up 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks on Sunday.
