Rockets’ Amen Thompson ‘to miss rest of NBA Summer League with ankle sprain’

Rockets rookie Amen Thompson ‘to miss the remainder of NBA Summer League after ankle sprain rules him out for two-three weeks’

Houston Rockets rookie Amen Thompson’s 2023 NBA Summer league is likely over due to an injury, according to a report.

The guard suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain during the Rockets’ clash against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, according to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears.

The 20-year-old, who will wear a boot, is reportedly now expected to miss two-three weeks, meaning he could be sidelined for the remainder for the Summer League, which finishes on July 17.

It comes as a blow to Houston as Thompson had impressed before his unfortunate injury.

He looked good in his debut, finishing with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds before being forced off.

Thompson was selected with the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft last month with his twin brother swiftly behind him as the Detroit Pistons took Ausar Thompson with the No. 5 pick.

The selections made them the first brothers in Draft history to be picked in the top 10 in the same year.

The pair were supposed to face off against each other on Sunday in the Rockets’ matchup against the Pistons but Amen’s injury has delayed their sibling rivalry.

Meanwhile, Amen wasn’t the only rookie to suffer an injury blow Friday as No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson was also forced out of the game.

The Trail Blazers rookie suffered a right shoulder injury according to the team and did not return. He finished the game with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds in 21 minutes.

There has been no news so far on whether Henderson will return to see out the rest of the Summer League.

With Henderson and Thompson both out of the game, Jabari Smith Jr. nailed a game-winning three-pointer with just 0.6 seconds left to give Houston a 100-99 win.
