  • Stroll crashed into the barriers in Spa after overnight rain in Belgium
  • This had a knock-on effect for Alonso, who was prevented setting a lap time
  • Aston Martin took a risk to change tyres in SQ2 which ultimately backfired

Lance Stroll crashed at the Sprint Shootout in Belgium to prevent team-mate Fernando Alonso from setting a lap time.

It was a disaster for Aston Martin, who put Stroll on medium tyres in the hopes of benefitting and earning a place in the top 10 for the start of the Sprint.

However, Stroll was concerned and told his team ‘it’s too early’ over the radio before he smashed into the wall.

This affected birthday-boy Alonso, also, who was yet to set a time in the session.

The Spaniard never got the opportunity to go fast enough to secure his spot in the top 10 either.

However, Alonso remained calm when talking to his team over the radio.

He was told that he was out as the session would not be restarted before being asked afterwards what would be possible for him in the Sprint.

Responding calmly, he said: ‘Nothing, nothing.’

The disaster for Aston Martin comes after they took a huge risk during the delayed session.

Overnight rain saw the Spa-Francorchamps track drying in the morning, with the cars beginning on intermediate tyres before Aston Marting took the risk to change to slicks.

At the end of SQ2, they put stroll on these medium tyres in the hope of benefitting from extra speed, but it completely backfired.
